The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is trying to gather public opinion on passenger and freight rail service in Kentucky. While KYTC will include feedback gathered in the rail plan, the Cabinet cannot require Amtrak or private rail companies to conduct changes or improvements to their service or facilities. All comments collected will be forwarded to the proper facilitator.

The goal of this survey is to gather information within the existing rail service areas, and provide additional insight for the potential future of rail within the state of Kentucky.

  1. Here’s an idea that’s not really statewide, but I think quite cost-justifiable. I’ve often said that Louisville would be the perfect place for a light rail system. Please consider these highly attended Louisville attractions that could be served by a single north-south route (possibly 3rd or 4th St):

    1. YUM Center/Belle of Louisville/Waterfront Park/Galt House
    2. KY Int’l Convention Center and surrounding hotels
    3. 4th St Live and surrounding hotels
    4. Palace Theater/Brown Theater and surrounding hotels
    5. Spaulding Univ
    6. Univ of Louisville
    7. Churchill Downs/Univ of Louisville football stadium
    8. Louisville Int’l Airport
    9. Ford Assembly Plant
    10. UPS

I spent the weekend in Cincinnati and used their Connector one night. It was clean, safe, and efficient and might make a good model for one that would be very beneficial here!

  2. I believe having a robust rail system (including high speed passenger) is necessary for national and economic security. The existing rail infrastructure in the US is insulting to its citizens and businesses. The longer we drag our collective feet on high speed passenger rail, the further we fall behind economic peers/rivals, and the more expensive these projects become. All of the above needs to be addressed at the Federal and state levels across the country.
